The broth’s foundation consists of a blend of oil, shallots, garlic, ginger, and serrano peppers. When it comes to crafting the broth, the key is to cater to your personal taste. Begin with the suggested measurements of soy sauce, rice vinegar, miso, and sriracha. The Serengeti: Where the Wild Things Roam

underline-wave.png

The Serengeti National Park is a true African gem, where the iconic Great Migration takes center stage. Witness millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles traverse the vast plains, pursued by hungry predators. This remarkable spectacle of nature is just one of the park’s attractions. Encounter the Big Five, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos, on thrilling game drives. The Serengeti’s dramatic landscapes, from endless savannahs to lush riverine forests, will leave you awestruck.

Witnessing the Great Migration is indeed a spectacle, it can take hours of patience so be prepared to sit silently as you observe the systematic strategy and courage the Wildebeests pick up to make the crossing. The crossing of the river Mara might seem frivolous to those who only see a photo but it is indeed a matter of life and death as many times a few fall prey to the crocodiles in the river. The herd mentality of these Wildebeests is best supported by the strategic Zebras who assist them by being their eyes and guide. Hence, the two species can be seen traveling together across miles.

Another amazing sight to witness a Lioness hunt. The stealth, patience and strategy used for hunting the quick and agile Gazelles is a marvel in itself. On one hand you would be rooting for the Gazelle to escape but on the other hand you would be mesmerized by the sheer power a Lioness has.

Destination:

Kilimanjaro: Conquering Africa's Roof

underline-wave.png

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, beckons adventurers from around the world. The journey to the summit is a life-changing experience, taking you through five distinct ecological zones, from lush rainforests to a surreal lunar-like landscape at the top. Whether you opt for the Marangu, Machame, or Lemosho route, reaching Uhuru Peak is an achievement of a lifetime.

Being basic trekkers and due to paucity of time we trekked only till the first base which takes nearly 5-6 hours and is roughly 8kms. The terrain is rocky, but is a comfortable day trek for beginners. Enjoy the lush green forest as you breath in the fresh air and spot Blue Monkeys and Wild Dogs along your path.

The further up you go the tougher it gets to breath, so be prepared if you decide to climb the summit.

Destination:

Ngorongoro Crater: The Eighth Wonder

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “eighth wonder of the world.” This natural amphitheater is home to an astounding variety of wildlife, including the Big Five, zebras, cheetahs, and flamingos. Capture the perfect wildlife shot against the backdrop of this ancient volcanic caldera.

The landscape of Ngorongoro Crater is a stunning showcase of nature’s artistry, offering a breathtaking array of geological features and diverse ecosystems such as the shimmering Lake Magadi, that draws flocks of Flamingos, the remnants of the crater’s volcanic past that are scattered across the landscape and adding the cultural charm are the Maasai Bomas (village), the only human settlements who are allowed to live inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as they harmoniously coexist with the wildlife and nature.

Known as the “Spice Island,” this tropical paradise was a haven for us after the exhilarating and jam packed journey across Tanzania. It offered a harmonious balance between relaxation and adventure.

Zanzibar’s history is a tapestry woven from African, Arab, and European influences. It was a vital hub in the ancient spice trade, making it a melting pot of cultures. The enchanting Stone Town, is a living testament to this history. Narrow winding streets, intricately carved wooden doors, and ancient mosques transport visitors to another era.

The beaches of Zanzibar are a vision of paradise. Powder-soft, ivory sands meet turquoise waters, creating a setting that beckons sun-seekers and water enthusiasts alike. The coral reefs surrounding the island are a diver’s paradise. If you are lucky when you go snorkeling or on diving expeditions you can catch a glimpse of colourful fishes, dolphins and even the elusive whale sharks.

Zanzibar’s nickname, the “Spice Island,” is well-deserved. A visit to a spice plantation offers a sensory journey through fields of cloves, vanilla, cardamom, and cinnamon. Savor the intoxicating scents and learn about the island’s spice heritage just by walking through the Stone Town streets.

End your day with a serene sunset dhow cruise. Drift along the coast as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the Indian Ocean. It’s a moment of pure tranquility.

Immerse in Myths and Architecture at Yaganti Temple

Yaganti is known as one of the most famous Shiva Temple in Andhra Pradesh. The temple dates back to the 5th and 6th centuries that housed Pallavas, Cholas, Chalukyas, and Vijayanagara rulers.

The Temple has a beautiful idol of Shiva & Parvathi (Ardhanareeswara) carved out of a single stone. This is probably the only place where Lord Shiva is worshipped in an idol form instead of Shiva Linga. It is believed that Sage Agastya performed penance for Lord Shiva at this place and requested Shiva to appear in Ardhanareeswara form which is worshipped here.

A unique feature of the temple is the Nandi statue which has been growing in its size. Previously built inside a four pillar canopy around which people could easily take circles. The Nandi has grown so much so that the temple authority had to remove one pillar. It is said that the Nandi will come to life at the time of Kaliyuga and will run away screaming.

There are several natural caves in the hills around the temple which were home to several saints. Most famously one can visit the cave of penance of Saint Agastya and Saint Potluri Veera Brahman.

An amazing feature of this temple is its Pushkarini with very pure water. No one knows how the water flows into Pushkarini in all seasons. Devotees consider that a bath in the holy Pushkarini before visiting Shiva is highly beneficial.
As per legend, crows do not fly in Yaganti. When Sage Agastya was meditating here, Kakasura, king of crows disturbed him from his meditation so, he cursed the crows not to enter the premises. Thus, Shani also can’t enter this place as the crow is a vehicle of Shani.

Tips To Keep In Mind

underline-wave.png
Accomodation

There are several decent accommodations available near the temple that are budget-friendly as well.

Yagnati offers several decent guesthouses and lodges in the vicinity of the temple with ample parking and within walking distance of the temple.

Food

Although the area lacks restaurants, one can find snack shops for a quick chai, coffee, water and chips nearby.

Don’t miss the excellent fresh and pure veg temple lunch and dinner that is provided for free at the dining hall. If you can be generous in donating so they can continue with their great service.

Clothing

Keep in mind that you are visiting a temple, make sure to wear proper ethnic attire covering your body

ANCIENT RUINS OF HAMPI – A TRIP BACK TO THE GOLDEN AGE

As a history and architecture buff, Hampi had been on my bucket list for a long time. I got my chance to bear witness to this once magical city now left in ruins on my drive to Gokarna, Karnataka from Vizag, Andhra Pradesh. Some say even one week wouldn’t be sufficient to explore and piece together the remnants of this ruined city, but I tried to cram the highlights in 3 days.

Welcome to Hampi

Once a capital of the historical Vijaynagara Dynasty, this temple town brimmed with riches, culture, architectural marvels and mesmerizing landscape that made it stand out to local and foreign invaders. The lost kingdom now a UNESCO World Heritage Site is still under excavation to unearth the hidden mysteries and beauties that got lost during natural calamities and multiple invasions.

Entering the town of Hampi, one is immediately transported back to 1500AD, reflecting on the magnitude of the kingdom and the prosperity it enjoyed. Thanks to the conservation and restoration efforts by UNESCO, one can envision the life that once was.

Driving through the city one can see the drastic change in the landscape. Amidst small hillocks made of boulders, deep blue sky and striking greens of the fields, take a moment’s break and appreciate the wonders of nature and architectural mastermind.

The landscape of rich greens, deep blues and contrasting browns

Must Visit and Must Experience:

  1. Bheema’s Gateway

Get transported to the historic city of ruins as you enter ‘Bheema’s Gateway’. One of the many entrances to the city, this huge archway gets its name from the epic Mahabharata and its legendary character, Bheema. This military architecture is built with a strategic design in mind as no one can enter in a straight line. This helped the military earn precious few seconds to prepare for battle and secure the kingdom. The design also dissuades elephant movement due to its sharp turns in order to safeguard from surprise attacks.

The ruins still feature stone carvings from the Mahabharata such as Draupadi tying her hair, slaying of Keechaka, Bheema bringing back the celestial Soughandhika flower and more. This site is still under excavation by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) and doesn’t require any admission fee.

  1. Kandlekalu Ganesha (Bengal Gram Ganesha)

Situated on the slope of the Hemakuta Hill, this massive statue of Ganesha is carved out of a boulder. The belly of this statue resembles Bengal Gram (Chick Peas) also locally known as Kandlekalu, from which the statue derives its name. At a height of nearly 15 feet, the Kandlekalu Ganesha is one of the biggest statues currently in Hampi.

  1. Hemakuta Hill

Relish the splendid views of Hampi atop the Hemakuta Hill. Besides being one of the best locations for an aerial overview it also boasts of a spectacular sunrise or sunset spot. Admire the ruins scattered on the hill to get a glimpse of history, architecture, mythology and so much more.

Myth suggests that it was this hill on which Lord Shiva did penance before marrying the local girl Pampa. So impressed by the dedication and devotion of Pampa, Shiva not only agrees to marry her but also makes it rain gold. The name is derived from this mythical story, where Hema in Sanskrit means ‘Gold’. It is also said that it is upon this hill Shiva opens his Third Eye to kill Kama (Lord of Lust) for disturbing his penance. But later Shiva resurrects Kama as a characteristic feature instead of a physical form on hearing the pleading Rathi (wife of Kama, Goddess of Passion).

  1. Monolithic Nandi

Known to be the guard and protector of Hampi, the Monolithic Bull or Nandi faces the Virupaksha Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Housed in a stone structure this large scale Nandi is a site to observe and appreciate.

  1. Mathanga Hills – Sunset Point

Mathanga Hill is renowned for its surreal sunset views of a nearly 20-25 min trek up a deteriorating path amidst trees and a steep climb. The hilltop gives a spectacular aerial view of the ruins of Hampi and makes the exhausting hike worth it.

Be careful while climbing as it is not an easy hike, wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Go at least 30 min before sunset so that you have plenty of time to hike up and enjoy the view. If the climb seems daunting, an easier and equally breathtaking sunset can be seen from the Hemakuta Hill

  1. Prasanna Virupaksha

Considered to be one of the oldest functioning temples, this pilgrimage site holds special importance for worshippers of Lord Shiva. It is said to have been constructed in the 7th century AD and has been functioning every day since. The large temple complex houses several stucco figures, a Kalyana mandapam, a 100 pillar hall for celebrations, several smaller shrines dedicated to other gods and goddesses and a large temple kitchen.

An important and memorable experience to take back from the Virupaksha Temple is your interaction with the temple elephant. Hand the elephant a Rs 10 note into its trunk and receive an auspicious blessing from the elephant.

The temple houses many hidden secret passageways and mysteries, a guided tour would help reveal the history, architecture and philosophy behind the temple structure.

  1. Underground Siva Temple

Believed to be one of the oldest temples in Hampi, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was constructed a few meters below ground because of which it is perpetually filled with water making it inaccessible to enter the inner sanctums.

Currently, the temple is dry due to the reduced monsoon season, so one can walk to some extent but the main shrine room still consists of water and can only be viewed from outside.

  1. Lotus Mahal

Owing to its name to the shape of the structure, this domed architecture with archways and balconies resembles a half-bloomed lotus bud. Although the purpose of this structure is unclear, it is believed to be part of the Zenana Enclosure, a special socializing area for the women folk of the royal family.

The interior decorations and carvings have a curious mix of Hindu and Islamic architecture. Surrounded by a large garden this is considered to be a popular photographed site in Hampi. Relax under the cool breeze in the garden and reminisce how the queens would entertain themselves during scorching days.

  1. Elephant Stable

These 11 domed tall structures housed the royal elephants. Some rooms were interconnected and each have a small manhole in the back for the mahouts to enter. Elephants rested here and got ready for celebrations and processions. The structure in itself is one of the least destroyed architectures in Hampi hence one can appreciate the carvings and designs.

  1. Queens Bath

Said to be used by the Queen and her female companions this octagonal structure comprises of verandas enclosing a big open pond with several balconies and an aqueduct. The whole pond has no roof and gives a beautiful view of the deep blue sky. Once filled with fragrant flowers and perfumed water, this beautiful bathing pool is now dry.

  1. Stepwell

This geometric stepped tank located inside the Royal Enclosure stored rainwater used for daily consumption.

  1. Monolithic Shivalinga

The monolithic Shivalinga, also known as the Badavilinga is the biggest Shivalinga in Hampi. It is said to be commissioned by an old peasant woman, hence the name Badavi (which in the local language means old woman). The inner sanctum is filled with water as a representation of the river Ganga flowing from the locks of Shiva’s hair. Upon closer inspection, one can see three eyes carved on the Linga to symbolize the three eyes of Shiva.

  1. Ugranarasimha

This monolithic statue of the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu is the largest statue in Hampi. The half-man half-lion, Narasimha can be seen in his ferocious form with eyes protruding, flared nostrils and fangs sitting on the coil of the giant Sesha Nag, the seven headed snake. The heads of the snake form an umbrella for the statue of Narasimha.

Ugranarasimha statue is said to have his consort Goddess Lakshmi sitting on his lap embracing him with her hand on his back, but due to several attacks, the statue was destroyed. Only remnants of her hand and fingers on his back are now visible. Entering the enclosure one can see the detailed carvings and designs of this massive monolithic structure.

  1. Coracle Ride

This circular shaped country boat has been in use to transport people, goods and sometimes animals across the Tungabhadra River. Now it is merely a tourist attraction to enjoy the ride and visit ruins along the river. Take an hour ride up and down the river stretch and explore the myths and ancient sites of worship. Made of cane, bamboo and plastic sheet and rowed using a paddle this small boat is an extremely cute and economical mode of transportation.

  1. 1000 Shivalinga’s

Along the Coracle Ride make a pitstop on the river bank and hike up on the boulders to the 1008 Shivalinga’s. Close to this one can also spot an array of 108 smaller Shivalinga’s as well. Carved on the flat surface rock, these Shivalinga’s are still prayed to be the local villagers. Due to not being easily accessible, it is not populated by tourists.

Spot other intricate stone carvings from this spot on either side of the river. Still remaining structures are that of Lord Vishnu in a reclined position, Goddess Parvathi inside a ruined shrine, Sugreev’s Cave and other smaller shrines and carvings. During heavy monsoon seasons, many of these structures remain submerged under water and are deteriorating due to the current.

  1. Vittala Temple

The most magnificent and extravagant attraction of Hampi is the Vittala Temple. The temple is a holistic campus comprising of a daily goods and services bazaar, pavilions, towers, halls, temples and more. Originally built in 15the century AD, successive kings contributed to enhancing the temple complex.

One of the main attractions of Vittala Temple is the stone chariot that has become extremely popular after becoming a part of the INR 50 note. The stone chariot is in fact a temple in itself, a shrine to the vehicle of Lord Vishnu, Garuda. The chariot faces the temple sanctum that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Vittala avatar, popular amongst the cattle herders of that region. The chariot is adorned with battle scene carvings from myths and floral motifs. The wheels of the chariots are said to be free to rotate, but currently are resting to avoid any further damage to the structure.

Another awe-inspiring detail of the Vittala Temple is the featured monolithic pillars that are part of the Great Hall also known as the Maha Mantapa. These pillars were designed in such a fashion that tapping each pillar produced different music.

Explore each section of the temple complex with the help of a guide to understand and uncover the mysteries of the architecture and the hidden messages in different sculptures and carvings. The detail of each carving would go unnoticed unless explained by a guide.

  1. Krishna Temple

Built in the 15th century by King Krishnadevaraya on the occasion of conquering the kingdom of Udaygiri, this beautifully ornate temple with detailed carvings of mythical stories, animals and floral designs is dedicated to Balakrishna. The statue of infant Krishna currently resides in a museum in Chennai. Currently under restoration, one can still walk those the temple complex to get a feel of the authentic and still maintained Vijaynagara era temple architecture.

  1. Hanuman Temple Sunrise Point

Relic has it that this Hanuman Temple, also known as Anjaneya Hill is the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. Visit this mythical hill for its sunrise by climbing nearly 570 steps. Start your day early around 5:30 to reach the hill and commence your climb. Generally, the climb takes around 45min, depending on how you would like to pace yourself.

Witness a magical sunrise overlooking vast paddy fields and the ruins of Hampi. Be careful of the monkeys as they are notorious for stealing food from your hands.

19. Cafe Whispering Rocks

While in Hampi if you crave a good ambience and food that also happens to be #petfriendly check out #WhisperingRocks. The cafe is a little drive from Hanuman Sunrise Point. Navigate your GPS beforehand as you might have difficulty with the network during some parts of the drive.

There is a lot to see, a lot to understand and a whole lot of experience in Hampi. Plan your itinerary carefully with proper time dedicated to each location as there is so much detailing you wouldn’t want to miss. A lot of places require walking so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Make sure you have a water bottle and some snacks. Most importantly use sunscreen and a cap before you step out as the dusty place with the hot scorching sun will make you sizzle.

Tamara

A super luxury property that spans nearly 180 acres, Tamara is situated on top of a hill with an overview of the valley below. The property is extremely exclusive and requires pre-booking and entertaining only booked guests. If you are in the mood to splurge and pamper yourself, check out Tamara for at least a night.

Honey Valley ($$)

Honey Valley

Across from Tamara is the Honey Valley property, which in contrast to the super-luxury neighbour is a peaceful homestay overlooking the valley. Honey Valley is also the base camp for the highest mountain in Coorg. You would require a 4×4 vehicle to take you up to the property. The property unlike its neighbour is much more affordable and easier on the budget for solo travellers and couples.

Food to try:

Coorg Cuisine

Coorg Cuisine is one of the more popular restaurants in Madikeri. Must try dishes are the Pork Chops and Pork Fry (Pandi Fry). An interesting new dish I got to try was the Kadam Puttus, which essentially are rice balls to be dipped in a curry and savoured. Coorg has a lot of rice-based dishes owing to its vast rice fields.

Besides being travel friendly, Coorg is also beginning to accommodate and invite #Workation travellers who wish to spend some quality time amidst nature while working.

If you have been to Coorg let me know which other places are a must visit!

Moments of Nostalgia

Moments of Nostalgia

underline-wave.png

Whenever I think about Mishka, I immediately recollect the first time we met. Distinctly remember I had gone to work in New Jersey and during my break I as I had been doing everyday for the past 2-3 months I opened all the Animal Shelter websites. This had become my ritual. I scanned all the new profiles that had been listed and there she was, 3 month old Italian Greyhound and Terrier mix.

That evening I went to Manhattan to the Bidawee Animal Shelter and since they were closing in 30 min, I only got to spend 20 min there. They got this tiny little puppy, she looked so fragile but the moment they put her down, she was like the Tasmanian Devil.

Then she saw me sitting on the floor and came and sat in my lap, and she looked so peaceful and calm.

I realized the phrase ‘Love at First Sight’ is in fact true!

IMG_20201016_235654_696

The 20 min of interaction was enough for us to realize we had found our home in each other. I instantly inquired about the adoption process. I would have taken her home the very same day, but due to necessary and secure procedure I had to come back the next day with relevant documents.

The very next day I took leave from work and picked her up. This was essentially the first time I was holding a puppy and now I had decided to care for one. I didn’t even realize that I wasn’t even equipped with the bare necessities to welcome her home.  But all of those things fell in to place cus we learnt to understand and grow with each other.

The adoption process is fairly easy in the US. They, however, have an evaluation criterion to ensure the new #parent is financially stable and can provide for the #pet emotionally as well. Once my profile met the necessary standards, I was allowed to adopt Mishka with the necessary vaccines.

Adjusting and accommodating came so naturally to both of us, it was like we had already made space in our lives to include each other. Our daily routine fell into place effortlessly. It was helpful that she was only 3 months old and she could accommodate her new surroundings very well. That night, even though I bought her a new bed, she refused to sleep unless I let her #sleep next to me.

She is a #princess. She knows it and acts like it. She is very particular about how she wants to be treated. She loves her belly rubs, but there is a specific way she wants them. Mishka has a set morning routine- We take a walk to the #park#play with other #doggies, chase squirrels and birds followed by addressing our hunger pangs. After that, it is #siesta time till evening, basically rolling from one bed to the other. And in the evening she’ll either run by herself or we play fetch.

Mishka is an extremely social #dog, but she has her moods. I remember the first time I had to leave Mishka at a farm in #Alwar as I was traveling. It was the first time we were going to spend more than 3 hours away from each other. It was a first for many things. When I came back to pick her up, she was furious. She refused to come to me! After two hours of trying, I just picked her up and hugged her- which is when she finally relaxed and I could feel her anxiety and anger melt away.

Mishka is my shadow. We go to bed together, eat together, and #travel together. I feel an immense sense of security, compassion, and pure #love for her. Knowing that I have her gives me the confidence that tomorrow even if I have no one- I know she will be there to love me, unconditionally.

Pet-Friendly Train Travels DEL – VZK

Pet Friendly Train Travels

underline-wave.png

Pets are an integral part of our lives, we love them unconditionally, care for them and receive twice as much from them. But if you love to travel, leaving your pet at home or at a boarding facility will always be stressful. You’d worry if they were being taken care of properly, or if they were safe and probably not enjoy your journey as much as you planned to.

My travel journey started as a solo-traveler, backpacking through the streets of Europe or road tripping in the US but after adopting Mishka I realized exploring new streets would be even more fun and memorable if I had her with me. We soon started exploring cities in India from the convenience of my car. Traveling by road although is the best, but it does have certain restrictions like the time and distance you can cover.

IMG_0149-01

For our most recent trip, Mishka and I decided to visit Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. A port city, known for its beaches and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, which also happens to be my hometown. Travelling the distance from Delhi to Vizag by car was not an option, hence we picked the next best thing: Train. A little hesitant at first, we soon were excited about our little adventure.

The process is quite simple:

Step 1: Figure out where you want to travel with your pet and visit the IRCTC website. You’ll have to create a login ID and Password

Step 2: Book your ticket. The only criteria to traveling by train with a pet is to book a First AC ticket!!! You do have the option of putting your pet in the luggage/cargo van, but I would NOT recommend that. The First AC has 2 options, either you can book in a coupe or a cabin depending on how many people are traveling with you. In case you are two travelers and a dog you can book a coupe, if more then book a cabin. But if you are a single traveler with a pet, you can book a seat in a coupe and pray that the other occupant is ok with a pet OR to be on the safe side book both the berths (which is what I did for our first train journey)

Step 3: Pack your pet’s and your bags!!! Make sure you have travel friendly bowls, food, water and loads of treats. I carried a pee pad, as most of the stops the AP Express made were not more than 2 minutes and I wasn’t sure where I could take Mishka to do her business.

Step 4: The day of your travel visit the Parcel Office at the railway station at least 2 hours before the journey. You’ll have to show your ticket confirmation, give them a scanned copy of your ID and give the details of your pet and a payment of Rs. 1075. The process is pretty easy as the parcel office folks are well versed with people traveling with pets. They’ll give you a receipt which you’ll have to show the TT.

Step 5: You are all set! Get in your coupe/cabin and enjoy the ride

If you have a dog, you already know and understand their personality, while many dogs are adventurous there are some that have anxiety and scare easily. You also might have taken your pooch on road trips, but train is a new territory so be vary and mindful of your pet’s wellbeing. Make sure they aren’t stressed. Mishka was very anxious throughout the trip and didn’t want to get off the bed as the sounds of the train, movement, confined space and smells were overpowering.

Hopefully, she’ll get used to it soon and we can go on more such adventures.

Would like to commend Indian Railways for making our journey so comfortable, safe and enjoyable. Right from the seamless online booking process, the officials at the Parcel Office to the train attendants and canteen servers made our journey so memorable.

Rishikesh – Relax and Refresh and Unwind with Nature

Got wheels beneath my feet and they have been itching to getaway! Now that the borders have opened, we made our way to Rishikesh @nakshatraresort for some good old no network zone.

A journey of about 7 hours from Delhi with quick stops along the way got us to Rishikesh with minimal traffic despite the E-Pass and COVID report having been removed.

PRO TIP: Make sure you have your EZ Pass for contactless Toll payment

Our choice of stay was Nakshatra Resort, situated bang on the river bank with a massive lawn, a great attraction for pet parents like me. With easy access to the river and rooms comfortably opening up to the lawn there was no need for us to leave the resort. Even four days felt too less to laze around and just bask in the sun.

The resort offers all three meals freshly prepared in buffet style, added to which they provide evening tea and supper, making it a vicious cycle of Eat. Nap. Repeat. With the setting sun starts the evening entertainment, the pakodas, chilli chicken and a peg all merged with the Punjab playlist. With no network, I could visualize Spotify repeatedly telling me to get the Premium Membership for this very occasion. If only I paid for the subscription, we could have heard good music offline.

Although I would have been satisfied with just lazing around the property, we decided to make this trip even more memorable by going for the famous White Water Rafting. The weather was perfect for the activity. With restrictions just lifted, there were relatively quiet a few people as I would have expected. Nearly a 3 hours adventure that took us through three rapids and landed us back to Ram Jhulla with a pit stop for Cliff Jumping and Maggie.

If there is one thing you should not miss it is Cliff Jumping in Rishikesh! A mini break from rafting we climbed up a cliff only to feel exhilaration coursing through me in the 3-4 seconds it took to splash into the icy cold water.

With overflowing wine, conversation and laughs under the sheet of stars and crisp fall air I felt the importance of being in the moment and how necessary it is to detach yourself ever so occasionally from the daily routine. Also, it’s a personal realization that it is so important to surround yourself with good company. The lockdown and social distancing for the past 7 months or so although necessary, were a good reminder of interpersonal relationships. We work so that our future is secure, but fail to cease the present in the process, take time and spend time with yourself, your loved ones and especially your pets!

It took a beautiful, no network location like Rishikesh for me to realize how essential it is to maintain the balance between solo traveling and having a healthy social life.

Stay Safe. Travel Responsibly.

Pondicherry in a Day!

Sometimes you only have a day and you must make the most of what you got. If you are anything like me, you’d use those precious few hours to Travel and Explore as much as your resources and feet can carry you. While in transit from Chennai to Bangalore, I had a day halt in Pondicherry. Pondicherry now known as Puducherry is a destination where I wish I had more time to spare.

Varadharaja Perumal Temple

Starting my day right by visiting the intricate and mesmerizing Varadharaja Perumal Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This Dravidian style of architecture is still decorated and maintained with colorful frescos, intricate carvings, beautifully adorned statues and a feeling of magic.

Sit under the painted ceilings, supported by the grey pillars and feel the cool breeze that’ll bring the much-needed tranquillity. With the daily Aartis and Chants, get all your five senses an out of body experience.

Pichavaram Mangrove Speed Boat Tour

Speed Boat Tour

The next step of cleansing your mind after the calming visit to the temple is to insert yourself in the lush nature. Take the Pichavaram Mangrove Speed Boat Tour, the second largest Mangrove forest in India after the Sundarbans. Home to many species of birds and as the name suggests, Mangroves! The boat tour is roughly around an hour and will take you through the thickest swamps, Mangrove canopies and cruise through the glaring sun. Breathe in the pure and fresh air and move on to the next destination.

https://lbb.in/chennai/pichavaram-mangrove-forest-cuddalore-chennai/

Auroville

If there is one thing Pondicherry is known for, it is Auroville! Created as an experimental township, it has been established as a centre for human unity. The premise of Auroville is to build a community that welcomes one and all, irrespective of all caste, creed, religion, nationality etc. just a community of harmonious and peaceful co-existence. Spend some time understanding the philosophical thought process of the conception of Auroville and channel your consciousness to attain a higher spiritual understanding. Even if you don’t understand or agree with their ideologies, it is still a peaceful place to unwind and reflect on your thoughts.

Promenade Beach

Keeping in trend with the day’s theme of serenity and tranquillity I ventured out to sit by the Promenade Beach for a sunset view. But before you check out the beach view, make sure you walk through the streets for some vibrantly coloured houses. Built in the French colonial style, the mustard coloured villas and boutique residences provide a picture perfect backdrop.

And with the setting sun came the end of my stay in Pondicherry and that’s a wrap for the One Day Pondicherry Getaway!

Stay Tuned for more upcoming vacations!

Travelling Amidst COVID- A Mini Vacay to Manesar

2020 started with much zeal, it was supposed to be THE year for all unresolved resolutions. Mishka and I have been travel ready, bags packed, polaroid loaded and tank full to hit the roads. With much gusto we explored the Land of the Kings, in our 11 day road trip to Rajasthan. Our pumped-up energy was immediately crushed due to the unending COVID.

After nearly 6 months of being lockdown, we tip toed out of the house and into the lap of nature. Our mini Independence Weekend Getaway was just the little respite we needed to feel like our travel bug selves. Unlike most of our road trips, this was just 1.5 hours to The Heritage Resort, Manesar, Gurgaon.

The resort just off the Delhi – Jaipur highway is a massive property, lush with lawns and ample space for Mishka to chase squirrels. An added feature our trip was the most important safety precautions and sanitization of the property. We made sure we were heavily quipped with our own safety gear, minimized interacting with the staff and nearly bathed in sanitizer.

Heritage Resort, Manesar, Gurgaon

We assumed the property would be empty and Mishka and I would be little souls lost in the greens of the resort, but Delhi people never miss on an opportunity to vacation. The Independence Day long weekend was a perfect excuse for families to seek the much needed escape.

Forever Searching For Squirrels

The Heritage Resort took great consideration in terms of maintaining safe distancing, providing masks etc. Despite it being unprecedented times they managed to continue with weekend entertainment like Rajasthani Folk Singers, Puppet Show and Live Music while taking the necessary precautions. The property had several other amenities like a swimming pool, gym and spa that would have been ideal for a mini vacay in the Delhi heat but for safety measures, those weren’t operational.

Our Little Hideaway

A short but sweet getaway during these crazy times is all we can hope for! Itching for the next mini getaway.

Agra, an ode to Love

As a travel junkie, I am always looking for a quick and fun getaway from Delhi. This time I decided to explore Agra with my parents. A beautiful drive, courtesy of the Taj expressway and a luxury stay at the Radisson Hotel Agra.

Delhi to Agra – 3 hours approx.

Radisson Hotel – around Rs. 4000 for 2 people

A Mughal marvel, an architects dream and a romantics vision, Agra brings to life one of the wonders of the world. And naturally our First stop is none other than the majestic and breath-taking Taj. Makes you wonder about the determination, vision and emotions involved. Personally, I am all about the feels and the Taj hits the spot of eternal love.

While we had our share of being touristy and clicking pictures up close and personal with the Taj, we decided to take a step back and appreciate the wonders of human imagination. Removed from the bustling crowd, we saw the white marble and imagined how it must have stood atop the banks of the river, a single monolith, a testament to love.

Pro Tip: Do visit the moon garden also known as Mehtab Bagh for a picturesque sunset view point of the Taj.

Agra Fort

Our love for history, relics and architecture makes our bond even stronger. A girls day spent exclusively doing what we love doing, exploring and spending time with each other. One of the first tourists at Agra Fort, we managed to reach early in the morning to avoid both the heat and the crowds. Taking our time walking through rooms and gardens, a day spent just the two of us after ages. Consider hiring a guide, if you are interested in learning about the tales, myths and beliefs.

In our minds we live in a fantasy world, given a chance, we would have been born as Disney princesses but alas we made do with pretending to be living as princesses in the palace. The white marble rooms made for both winter and summer seasons, overlooking the Taj and intricate water features only made our current house seem extremely basic. C’est la vie.

Fatehpur Sikri

A quick half-day trip to Fatehpur and Sikri will complete the essentials of your visit to Agra. Although there are plenty of hidden architectural marvels, Fatehpur and the Jama Masjid are a must visit. A mere residence of Akbar and his three wives, Fatehpur is much like other architectural wonders, a beauty of design and symmetry.

One of the most popular and famous dargah, Jama Masjid houses the tomb of Sufi Saint Salim Chisti. Believer or not you can pray and provide offerings to the saint and hope for miracles.

Sikandra

A quaint town with one of the most beautiful and biggest tomb, Sikandra is the resting place of none other than emperor Akbar. Reliefs of varied religions are depicted on stone and marble carvings as an ode to his belief and incorporation of elements from various religions. Spend an hour here, walk around the gardens and marvel at the architectural mysteries.

Why are vacations extremely short? If only life could be a series of trips! This one came to an end, time to plan the next and dream about the one after. Always looking for suggestions, so keep them coming.

Living the best life with the best companion

Travel Blogger Exploring the World with her Dog

underline-wave.png

Satisfaction is multiplied when ones reason for happiness is shared with others. I had the pleasure of interviewing for Travel + Leisure India magazine and put into words what travel means to me and how it has changed my views, ideas, lifestyle and more.

IMG_20201125_180036_163

Over the past few years, I drew a lot of inspiration from the travel blogger community. Everyday on Instagram, I would vicariously live through the journeys of travelers to exotic places — whether it was a romantic getaway or a bunch of friends exploring the local cuisine or perhaps, seeing history of architecture through the lens of someone; but I noticed a serious lack of content that single Indian girls like me who enjoyed traveling could relate to. I am not an Instagram sensation or a celebrity, but I felt like I was someone who people could connect with and maybe wonder, “Well if she can do it, then I definitely can.”

And then I found my perfect travel companion, Mishka. For over a year I have been living the best life with this furry Baby. Our interests, laziness, curiosity, and need for sleep are the perfect blend to make any trip memorable. She is tiny enough to be carried and hyper enough to drag me.

Here’s to more adventures with this little heart.

Read about our journey across cities, cultures, customs, and playlists.

Summers are for Resorts – Alwar, Rajasthan

So many destinations but so little time

Mishka and I decided to beat the Delhi heat but forgot Rajasthan is much hotter, yet we had a sun-kissed long weekend spent mostly floating in the pool and dreaming of mojitos at the beautiful Alwar Bagh Resort by Ammod. A mini road trip of 4 hours from Delhi, Alwar is an easy drive and quite convenient to reach without much hassle. As is our tradition Mishka and I started our trip with a pit stop to check out the local flavor.

IMG_20190420_115324__01.jpg

Springing as a pleasant surprise right when we were getting hungry is Desidhani, situated on the highway, good vegetarian bites and a traditionally decorated ambiance. Similar to most dhabas on the highway Desidhani serves paranthas and quick eats only added bonus being the village vibes of being seated under a hut, roosters, and geese casually parading about and the beautifully painted mud walls with traditional designs.

Reaching the resort during the peak afternoon heat was perfect timing to check in and jump into the pool. The landscape must have been Mishka’s dream come true, with three massive lawns for her to marathon past. The impressive Rajasthani Haveli feel was a delight to stay in. The rooms were spread across three different buildings inspired by the Rajasthani heritage of projected balconies (jharokhas), arches, red sandstone vibes of living in our little palace.

Although there isn’t much to do in Alwar, families had poured in from neighboring cities to enjoy the extended weekend and check out from their busy daily lives and the city buzz.

Those interested in nearby attractions can plan:

* a safari tour to the Sariska Tiger Sanctuary or

* drive over to the Siliserh Lake for some magical views of the lake surrounded by the Aravalli’s or

* take a drive up the hills to the Alwar Fort and get a view of the city and the Hanuman Temple.

IMG_20190421_131430.jpg

Driving back always leaves me with sad remorse of getting back to reality and the bustling life. So, to combat that feeling I did what always makes me happy and excited, I started planning for my next trip, due in May!

IMG_20190421_121600__01__01.jpg

Suggestions are always welcome.

A majority of my travel is made possible because of great deals from Make My Trip and Booking.com

April is for our Anniversary

April Is for our anniversary!

underline-wave.png

Each day with my furry baby Mishka is a celebration and this week we completed a year together. Time is such a strange concept, could have sworn it was last month that I had seen her profile on Petfinder looking to be adopted and got 10 minutes to meet her before the shelter closed for the day. She was a tiny 7lbs skinny ball of energy with a strange love for running aimlessly. The next day I was so anxious, but I knew I had to adopt her before anyone else. The decision was so sudden but so certain that I was unprepared, with no bed, no bowls, no toys, no food, no pee pads I brought her home with me, having no intention of letting her stay in a shelter any longer than she already had.

IMG-20190404-WA0021__01

First time for both of us, I suppose neither of us knew what to do. But she made each and every day so easy, so happy and so full of life. I truly hope she understands how much she is loved, and how thankful I am to her for coming into my life and how much credit goes to her for helping me become my own person. Before Mishka, I never really grasped the importance of a pet and now all I want to do is make sure she has a healthy, fun and luxurious life.

For those who have met her, the one quality that stands out is her love for running. An Italian Greyhound and Terrier mix she is high energy, agile and extremely fast. And as a part of my 2019 New Year’s resolution, I want to travel/experience one destination each month ideally with my little furball, so I am on a constant lookout for pet-friendly places in and around Delhi to give her the time and space to freak out. For our April travels, we decided to do a day trip to my current favorite pet resort, Jeffurry’s.

About 1.5-hour drive from home with traffic, Jeffurry’s is a massive Pet Resort, inclusive of Boarding, Pool, Café, Grooming, Pet Store, Vet and other facilities near Rohtak. Run by a lovely couple and their two amazing mascots Jeffurry and Mazza, the luxurious property has ample space for dogs to run around while being safe and secure. Each and every little detail in this property has been carefully designed to optimize the stay of your pet and you can clearly see the love and affection the staff has towards the wellbeing of dogs of all shapes, sizes, and demeanor.

Despite reaching during the peak afternoon heat and us being the only visitors we were welcomed and made comfortable to enjoy the pool and the café. By far the best day and the perfect way to celebrate our 1 year together, Mishka got to run wild, snack on treats and got her first ever official swimming lessons. Although frightened at first, she gradually warmed up to swimming and hopefully will come to love being in the water as much as I do.

A memorable Saturday for both Mishka and I of total bliss, leaving work behind, just enjoying our own company, jumping in and out of the pool and munching on small eats. Would totally recommend all pet parents to make the trip and give your furry baby’s day out.

Running off to the Mountains

Fortunate are those who can travel when they want and how they want (and budget is never an issue)

– Just A Desi Chori

Staying true to our New Years Resolution 2019, Mishka and I wandered off to Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh for our Feb destination. A beautiful drive of nearly 6 hrs. doesn’t seem exhausting when you have good company and good tunes to keep you entertained. Despite not being morning people, we started our journey relatively early to avoid the Delhi Monday office traffic. With the winter sun streaming in and the car zooming at 90 on the open road, it was our own little movie road-trip sequence. So grateful for the lack of buses and trucks and the 90 km/hr. speed limit. Do maintain your speed, cus there are plenty of cops to make your wallet light.

IMG_20190225_134401

As is with any road-trip for Mishka and I, we had to make a pit stop to pick up some freshly squeezed orange juice as sustenance. There are plenty of vendors and on a hot day, this au naturel juice with no additives is just what Just A Desi Chori needs. And if hunger strikes, hundreds of dhabas are lined to graciously serve you hot paranthas and lassi and being super reasonably priced is just the kicker.

Mahal Farms:

Our stay for a few days was the lovely cottage homestay, Mahal Farms, with views that made waking up in the morning worth it. A personal backyard trail, amazingly friendly staff and in-house kitchen and you wouldn’t even want to leave your cottage. Since we landed during a week day, Mishka and I had the entire place to ourselves and were free to be in our element of playing around and just relaxing outdoors to soak up the much-needed sun and the clean fresh crisp air.

IMG_20190225_160251

Honestly, there isn’t much to do in Kasauli, but I guess that’s the best part. It is a retreat for those craving the disconnect from society and the digital world. Our agenda for our Feb trip was to have no agenda, no sightseeing but simply take in the sights and be content with our own company.

But as a check-off for having visited Kasauli, Mishka and I explored a few touristy spots.

Sunset Point:

IMG_20190225_170239

The sunset point is a short 7 min drive and a quick walk from Mahal Farms and if you take your car, you’d be asked for Rs. 100 entry fees. In the midst of the Air Force cantonment area, overlooking the valley is Kasauli’s top tourist attraction. Make sure you check the sunset time before heading there and having to wait in the chill breeze with nothing much to do but click pictures and contemplate life. While you are in that area, take a stroll along the road and check out the Gilbert Trail, Lovers Point and Suicide Point, for a better view of the mountains and the valley.

The misty mornings, sun filled afternoons and the setting sun would be a delight for any photographer and nature enthusiast. So, set up your tripod and catch the light playing wonders on the tall pine trees.

Mall Road:

Interacting with locals is in my opinion the best way to immerse in a culture and a place and the Mall Road is where you’ll find tourists, locals and goof food alike. Although it is a short strip, its fun to walk around and enjoy people watching.

Be very cautious of the Monkeys and Stray Dogs. Do Not Take Your Dog, especially if it is a small, playful little thing like Mishka. The monkeys are probably smarter than you and I and there is no outsmarting them by giving them food.

Savor the freshly made hot momos and buy souvenirs for remembrance.

Church of England:

Another picturesque attraction is this quiet little postcard church. Nestled amongst trees and cobbled stones, it makes for a great couple’s photo location. Take your boo and get dreamy photos for your house or even just Instagram.

Its Chai Time:

In the Mountains, the Air is Good

In the Mountains, the People are Nicer

But In the Mountains, the Chai is the Best.

The cold breeze and stretched out views and a cup of steaming hot chai with biscuits sounds so cliched, but I suppose it is cliched for a good reason. Those few moments of sipping hot tea, sitting on the side of the road and listening to the locals discuss their daily life are just precious and makes you wonder about why those mundane things bother us so much and why are we running around aimlessly. For these are the moments that re-charge us for a continued aimless struggle.

Snow baby:

On our last day in Kasauli, we were all packed and opened the curtains for the last glimpse of nature in its glory. Only to realize it had been snowing all morning. The previously green leaves were now laced with soft white flakes and the steady snowfall felt like an invitation for a last stroll before heading home.

It was also Mishka’s first snowfall and although it was freezing, her curiosity to taste every flake was fun to watch. We wish we could have extended our stay and enjoyed the magic of the mountains from the comfort of the heated cottage, but Delhi awaits and so does planning for our next destination.

For all those looking to spend quality time with that book you have been meaning to crack open, or that person you wish you could spend more time with, or just sit by yourself and mull over memories, your future or simply be in the present Kasauli is a great spot.

Relax amongst the chill breeze and warm people and be content.

Weekend Getaway to Jaipur

Like many, I made my 2019 New Year’s Resolution to travel. My goal is to travel each month to a new place, 12 months, 12 destinations. With the first weekend of the year in sight and a continued birthday celebration for furry baby, Mishka, I packed a bag and Mishka in tow drove the 260 km to Jaipur.

A beautiful drive of nearly 4.5 hrs in the winter morning was a perfect start to my Resolution 2019, propped with essential road trip munchies and my road trip playlist. The relatively empty highway had me itching to hit the gas, but the sneaky highway speeding radar forced me to stay in check.

Tip: Take a break at any of the several Midway Dhabas for a quick bite and stretches and make sure your car has sufficient petrol especially if you are a solo traveler like me.

Jai Niwas

After the long drive, furry baby, Mishka and I checked into the quaint pet-friendly hotel. In the center of the bustling city is this quiet Haven with two gardens that cut off the img_20190107_0942555500277507290974780.jpghonks and screeches. The well-maintained greenery brings a hilly chill wrapped with the warmth of the staff, who will make sure you are taken care of.

This place is great if you are traveling on a budget. If you don’t mind bunking with other backpackers ask them about their hostel accommodations. Since I had my own bunking buddy, Mishka with me I had to book the garden facing deluxe room.

Johri Bazaar

If you love collecting gems, jewels, handicraft, ethnic wear or even spices. This market has it all. Strike up a conversation with the street vendors, get your fill of bargaining and take home pretty trinkets and memorabilia of your time in Jaipur. Walk through the inner lanes and see the daily life unfolding from 10 am into the late evening.

Tip: Take a sneak-peak into the best places to wander and shop in Johri Bazaar

Galta Ji Temple

Wake up early and head to this hidden marvel of a place, resting a good 10 km from the main Jaipur city. This ancient Hindu temple features several temples built into its crevice and makes for amazing photographs. A little hike up the stairs is just the peace and tranquility you might have been looking for. If you are feeling adventurous take a dip in the pool along with several other devotees. But be careful of the Monkeys and avoid carrying food with you, unless you plan on sharing it with them.

Understandably a lot of people bring bananas and other food offerings for the several monkeys and cows, which, sad to say has made the picturesque site extremely dirty, leaving behind a trail of plastic wrappings and banana peels.

Be conscious and pick up your trash to revive this heritage site.

City Palace

Spend a good one hour at this still active and in-use palace. The beauty in its intricacies rich culture and past is well narrated in their 90 minutes audio guide. Take a walk down history through a visual representation of Jaipur, its Royalty, the Architecture and balance between the traditions and modernization.

Nahargarh Fort

On a clear sunny day, take in the entirety that is Jaipur from the edge of the Aravallis. The spectacular view of the Jal Mahal and the bustling growth of population feels so distant from this height.

Tip: Drive cautiously, as the road is a narrow two-way street that is frequented by buses and autos and not everyone likes to drive carefully on the winding road.

Hawa Mahal

A visit to Hawa Mahal is mandatory, right in the midst of the bustling city pops up the beautiful red and pink sandstone facade of the Hawa Mahal. Its intricate designs, right from the floor to the ceiling is purposefully made for those sweltering hot Rajasthan days, giving the royal women a front row viewing of the life running on the streets of Jaipur.

This five-storey landmark is designed in the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, consists of 953 jharokas or windows that resemble the honeycomb of a beehive.

Back to reality after the last minute getaway, I am still running on fumes and need to recover my sleep and energy. But I have already started preparing and planning for the next destination. Any guesses where I would go for my February Getaway?

Life Is Good If You Are A Dog

Life is Good If you are a Dog

underline-wave.png

Delhi you have impressed me!

Moving to India I was worried about Furry Baby, Mishkas well being and if I would be able to get proper care and services that we were used to in New York.

Everything in New York was fancy. Life is good if you are a dog living in the Big Apple. I probably visited more pet boutiques than any regular boutique.

But boy Delhi, how well you have taken to the pet culture! Today is Furry Baby’s first birthday and we are going all out. Cus Baby ka hai birthday bash!

IMG_20200927_225446_227

1. Starting off the day with extra snuggles and treats. Trying this new brand Yummy Tummy that comes in multiple flavors. Mishka seems to really like them.

2. Cus she’s a little princess, she’s getting a spa at the super adorable pet boutique Heads Up For Tails.

Their collection of treats, accessories, supplies is just amazing. Check out their beds and winter wear section.

3. No birthday should be celebrated without cupcakes. Since we are sugar fiends, Mishka is being treated to the customized and really tempting looking Pupcakes from Barkery.

They make amazing treats and celebration goodies and I’m just super excited looking at these designs made with so much consideration and creativity.

4. And because we would take any opportunity to make a road trip, Mishka is in for a surprise this weekend! Although still in the planning stages, we will be hitting the road for 2 days for a small getaway.

Furry Baby Turning One

furry baby turning one!

underline-wave.png

My furry baby, Mishka is turning 1 in a few days!!! She like most dogs loves sitting in my lap, enjoys car rides, stealing my food, chasing birds and giving me unconditional love and snuggles.

Screenshot_20180719-112944__01

But what makes her different is she is the most hyper energy dog anyone I know has ever met. She is restless, jumpy and extremely fast. She takes time warming up to men and will wriggle herself between me and the person I’m hugging.

And even though it’s just the two of us, I’d like to make Jan 3rd special for her. She loves squeaky toys and lives for food and playtime.

Suggestions on what I can do for her???

Once a Desi Chori, Always a Desi Chori

You can travel the world, eat the finest food, live a luxurious life but once a Desi Chori, will always be Just A Desi Chori!

IMG_20181101_202126_842.jpg
Rikshaw Rides are no joke

Today, like a pilgrim I made the annual trip to my holy land i.e. Lajpat Nagar. Before anyone confuses me for a shopaholic and bargain enthusiast, I am neither. I just enjoy the chaos, the yelling, the excitement and most definitely the scattered food stalls. The options are overwhelming and the salesmen excessively persuasive. But I go there just to take in the compact craziness of this city.

img_20181101_171306_bokeh4340758135869770174.jpg

Walk down the little streets in this maze of a place to find cute trinkets for your house or even junk jewelry to go with any outfit. With all the walking, window shopping and constantly saying ‘No’ to vendors, you might get exhausted. For me, the best nourishment in Lajpat Nagar is the fire-inducing Momos with Chili sauce or the Masala Corn which must be supplemented with a freshly made mixed fruit juice or for old times’ sake a Goli Soda. Take a rickshaw ride around the block for a feel of adventure and fear for life.

Any place in Delhi that you would like to revisit just for old time sake?

Is it a Millennial thing?

Is it a millennial thing?

So many options, so many choices, so many decision and hence so much confusion! Is it with just us millennials or was it the case with everyone in this age range?

Parents these days have become super supportive, they encourage and motivate their kids to think out of the box and let them pursue their dreams however unconventional. Maybe that’s part of my confusion, cus now I have no restrictions and no boundaries, and the options are endless. With nearly 65% of its population under the age of 35, it is no surprise India is discovering some creative, entrepreneurial young adults.

Last week I went to watch The Headliners at Siri Fort Auditorium, featuring the very talented Neeti Palta, Kanan Gill, Kenny Sebastian, Sejal Bhat, and my favorite Sonali Thakker. It was my first stand-up in India and I was in splits for a good 90 minutes. Later it made me wonder, although these were the big names in the comedy industry, they were about my age with a similar educational background and there are so many others who are pursuing their talents and interests and aren’t sticking to the safe and preferred career path of engineering and medicine. Watching them perform gives me hope that India is beginning to accept and create a market for your passion as a career minus the stigma.

Now the issue I am left with is, given that there is an industry for everything and I also have the support from the parents, but what do I do? There are so many options that successfully keep me distracted. One day I want to make it as a freelance lifestyle blogger, the next day I see myself as an event organizer, which conveniently switches to a food critic or just out of fascination, a photographer.

Being 26 years old and still no concrete clue about what to do in life may not be the best situation to be in but there is hope. And this may also be a request to those who have figured it out to help the rest of us wanderers on how to identify our calling. Till then, I guess I can enjoy the dynamic diversity of varying careers until I find one unless the unconventional route is to try them all!

Oh My Dilli

In the past 8 years of missing out on the fast-paced development of this city, I am trying to play catch-up and it is overwhelming to say the least. Delhi is evolving into a multi-cultural hub by representing many international trends along with maintaining strong ties to its heritage.

img_20181011_1951328456619302629866618.jpg

The latest find of the week is Monkey Bar in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj. Cute date night space, with decorative fairy lights that transforms into a fun local watering hole with peppy music as the night progresses. The unique pyramid glass ceiling would remind you of the Louvre and if you are a romantic like Just A Desi Girl, do visit when it is raining to enjoy the cliched dreamy sequence with an equally appropriate background music.

The reasonable prices make you want to splurge more on the cocktails and small eats all with a desi twist. Try the Maanga, aam panna with vodka, if you need something refreshing with a kick. Watch out for their social media posts to be up to date if you like discovering new and local artists.

Finding my local hangout spot

Mocha Arthouse: Finding My Local
Hangout Spot!

underline-wave.png

It’s week 1 of being back in Delhi and its as hectic, chaotic and

bustling as I remember it to be. After days of trying to

adjust to the time difference, climate, pollution and traffic and

running around to setup the house for furry baby Mishka and me

I needed a breather. What better way to adjust and fit right in

than to start exploring your neighborhood joints.

My first outing was to a popular local hangout for the young and old alike, DLF Promenade mall, one of the biggest malls featuring several national and international brands, restaurants and bars and one of the nicer movie theaters in the city. Beat the heat or boredom by splurging or just people watching.

Neatly tucked in a corner with an indoor and outdoor seating is Mocha Arthouse, a cafe chain with 14 outlets in 12 cities. Open and airy during the day and candlelit at night, it makes a great transition from a cafe to a bar with the setting sun. Its cushy seating is perfect to sink into after a long day and watch some TV on the projected screen, or get comfy and catch up with your friends or even cozy up with your date or maybe you just want to avoid people and bury your face in a book. Their friendly and respectful staff will try to accommodate you and your reasonable whims.

Due to being relatively new to the social scene in Delhi, I may not be well versed with the current prices but I think their menu is reasonably priced. With their decent drinks and appetizer options, you can easily spend a couple of hours. If you like sugar and desserts as much as I do, try their shakes or if you are ambitious go for the Chocolate Avalanche that consists of chocolate ice cream, brownies, chocolate truffle, white chocolate sauce, dark chocolate sauce, chocolate mouse and moose ice cream for that much needed sugar rush!

New Orleans you take my heart and calories

img_20180820_1225578421222235573729272.jpg
Westin Downtown

Spent just two days in New Orleans, Louisiana with furry baby, Mishka, at the luxurious Westin downtown. After spending almost 3 weeks in 1-2 star hotels, the Westin was such a needed relief. The plush bedding and views were the princess treatment Mishka and I needed.

There might be plenty to do in New Orleans, but if you only have a couple of hours then here are some of my suggestions:

Stroll Back In Time –

One of the oldest and most popular historic section of New Orleans is the French Quarter. Flushed with bars, restaurants, nightlife, and of course the signature Creole architecture. The neighborhood has preserved the essence of the aristocratic lifestyle that once lived there, with the horse-drawn carriage rides, and the timeless old world charm of psychics and fortunetellers, ghost tours through cemeteries and laid back daily life. Soak in the history and enjoy the bustling of tourists and locals through the narrow streets with the famous to-go cup of Hurricane in one hand and maybe a praline cookie in the other.

For you fur parents, the French Quarter is pretty pet-friendly and welcoming. Take a stroll with your favorite walking buddy and walk into one of the restaurants or bars with a backyard. The servers at the entrance will invite you if you are the shy type like me.

Cajun. Creole. Calories –

img_20180819_205838_bokeh5286831554213092413.jpg
Sugar Rush Beignets

Absolutely a must! There are way too many things to try, start with a powdered sugar covered fried dough called beignet from Cafe du Monde that is open 24 hrs, for that energy spike you need. As you know Just A Desi Girl is all about sugar.

Only Regret is Ordering Six

Go to the famous Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar for some delicious char-grilled oysters with cheesy garlic bread. Trust me, you can’t have just six, you would want more!

No Space But Must Eat

Finally, for the main course try the signature four dishes, that is the taste of New Orleans, Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffee, Shrimp Creole and Red Beans and Rice.

One with Nature –

For the thrill seekers, go on an hour long swamp tour in a high speed airboat through the vast and dense swamps just 25 minutes outside of New Orleans. Get a chance to see 6 to 9 feet long alligators up close and watch them snack on marshmallows. Yes, they like that sugar too!

Nom-Nom

Coming from Manhattan it was refreshing to be able to interact with these lively and sweet people. No offense to New Yorkers but New Orleans definitely is hitting the charm-o-meter! Spend at least 2-3 days and try to avoid the summer heat, if not you might just be substituting the calories you gained from the food with the calories lost in sweat.

Whether it is a romantic getaway or a getaway from everyone, this place has something for everyone.

Rooftop season

Rooftop season is upon us and we owe it to ourselves to get out of the house ever so often and enjoy the beautiful sunsets from one of the many rooftop bars. A newly opened rooftop with great views is Ophelia, located in the prime Sutton-Turtle Bay area with views of Long Island City and midtown Manhattan.

Although it has a small eats menu and a decent drinks options, it’s a bit overpriced for Just A Desi Girl’s standards but it is a cute little spot close to home for a family happy hour. Its intimate and candlelit seating and sunset views are the selling point for a great first date. Forewarning, the time we went there the AC was nonexistent, which was brutal given that it was an 87° evening. I’m hoping they fixed the AC situation.

While the Manhattan weather is always unpredictable, make the most of the remaining sunny days with a spectacular sunset across the midtown skyline.

What to do when it’s a 100° in Austin

It’s almost a 100° in Austin, Texas today, making you want to peel layers of skin off, much less clothes. In the process of avoiding getting toasted, I stumbled onto this cute little boutique cafe, La Patisserie. Their outdoor seating was a respite for furry baby, Mishka and I and their super friendly barista made that heat stroke bearable.

Take the time to pause from the running around and sit outside with a cup of coffee and maybe a pastry or a couple of macaroons, that’ll make you feel like sitting in your own front porch. Also, it may not be Paris, but it sure is close enough, or maybe it’s just the heat talking.

Cheers!

All you need is… sugar?

All you need is...sugar?

underline-wave.png

Those who know me, know very well my love for all things SUGAR! And I might have just found the Sugar Heaven! This hidden gem as the name suggest serves everything cookie dough.

Step into the world of World’s Best Cookie Dough, New York

IMG_20180710_195930
Did you know?

They drop new flavours every Saturday and claim to be the inventors of Cookie Dough Stuffed Cookies
Rated 5 out of 5

If you ever had doubts about the existence of a cookie dough paradise, get ready to have those doubts shattered. World’s Best Cookie Dough in New York City offers a mouth-watering array of cookie dough-infused treats, ranging from cookies stuffed with cookie dough to cookie dough-filled cones and killer shakes. This place is a dessert lover’s dream, and you absolutely must experience it.

Although I had initially gone to try their Cookie Monster Shake, I ended up trying their Strawberry Freakshake. Apparently, they make the Cookie Monster Shake for special events like the Fourth of July. The Strawberry Freakshake has strawberry ice cream, puree, strawberries and other strawberry related stuff.

Simply put, it’s pure sugar and Just A Desi Girl has some sugar issues.

Get your hands on some cookie dough stuffed cookies or shakes, one is usually plenty. They are relatively huge and can be shared between 2 people, unless you are a cookie fiend.

If you’re an Instagram foodie, chances are you’ve come across a video or photo of this shop. It has gained a lot of buzz as a must-visit hotspot for both locals and tourists in the city, and the reasons behind its popularity are quite evident.

For my global friends, if you can’t make it all the way to New York, no worries, they shop worldwide! Reach out to them and get your sugar indulgence on.

It’s already summer, and if you had to get that summer bod you would have gotten it by now. So do yourself a favor and head to World’s Best Cookie Dough and indulge in ungodly amounts of sugar.

First stop Michigan

And we are off to a good start. First stop being Michigan, in our 39-day road trip. Furry baby, Mishka and I have been eagerly waiting for this adventure to begin. Mishka particularly has been waiting to get out of the ever crowded and noisy Manhattan. Although we have temperaments of city girls, we aren’t the biggest fans of the concrete jungle, show us some grass to roll around in!

My dad gave me company from New York to Michigan, as a jump start to my crazy 39 day solo trip. In this nearly 11 hour drive I kept wondering, what am I going to do with all this time to myself? I do have mishka with me, and as amazing as she is and what a wonderful co-pilot she makes, she still doesn’t give any responses to my questions, besides the occasional yawn. I did come prepared with my music and some stand up podcasts. This journey not only has miles but also several thoughts ahead me.

The endless road forces you to think of all that you have buried for a later date. The long stretches of farmlands and clean air is literally such a breath of fresh air. I’m excited and looking forward to this trip, exploring the vast land that is America and exploring and pent up thoughts and unsolved questions. This also gives furry baby, Mishka and me to really explore our freedom and bond more, if that’s even possible.

Stay connected for some upcoming updates of my 39 day road trip with Mishka!!!

Its all Up & Up from here

It's all up & up from here

underline-wave.png

Although you go down the stairs, it’s all Up and Up from there!

This upscale, low-key bar in Greenwich Village offers sophisticated cocktails and snacks in a dimly lit setting. Perfect to cozy up next to that cute someone or catch up with friends in a relaxed environment in a rather highly noisy neighborhood. Beautiful interiors, decorated with William Morris wallpaper, wooden and marble tables and the low hanging lamps put a spotlight on your table, giving the illusion that you are the only ones there.

IMG_20180710_210814

If you find yourself in the heart of NYU’s entertainment hub but prefer a more relaxed atmosphere for your pre-show drink without the bustling NYU crowd, look no further than The Up & Up. This downstairs cocktail haven, created by Matt Piacentini, offers a warmly lit ambiance that strikes the perfect balance—neither too bright nor too dim.

What makes this place even more enticing is its rich history; it was the renowned Gaslight Café back in the ’60s, frequented by the likes of Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan.

For those looking for a summery, refreshing drink, that is just a tad bit sweet I’d recommend the Bring June Flowers. Made with Reyka Vodka, Suze, Jasmine Tea, Cucumber, and Lemon Juice. Or if you want something with a bit of bitter/spicy aftertaste try the One-Star Yelp Review, made with Reyka Vodka, Montenegro, Cachaca, Grapefruit Juice, Lemon Juice, Demerara.

Planning a date night? Try Up and Up and I hope you have as much fun as I did! And let me know some of your favorite date night spots!

Meet furry baby, Mishka

Meet Furry Baby Mishka

underline-wave.png

This furry baby stole my heart the moment I saw her profile listed on Bidawee. She was only three months and 7 lbs when I adopted her.

I had gone through dozens of shelters and rescues for months and maybe a part of me kept postponing adopting a puppy, due to life situations. But within 15 minutes of our meeting, I felt life wouldn’t be the same.

screenshot_20180716-161537__016647006888508699724.jpg

She is the cutest little demon, deceiving others that she might be a shy docile type when in truth she is the crazy, hyper energy, food seeking monster. When she’s not sleeping, she’s either eating or searching or begging for food or she’s running like the wind. It’s because of her, I’m forced to be social. And it is because of her, I am happy.

Even though its only been a little over 3 months, she’s my heart and thanks to her I’m beginning to achieve my goals. One of the big ones being, Road trip 2018. Furry baby, Mishka and I will be on the road for 39 days, driving from the East coast to the West and back, starting July 20th. Stopping along the way to meet some family and friends and of course, see some of the historic locations.

Although Mishka is not new to road trips, this would be a new challenge and adventure for us both. I would love to document this trip for not only for my memory and for all the dog lovers but the travel enthusiasts who would like to travel with their dog in the US.

Your suggestions and comments, like always are welcome and do follow our journey on Instagram as well!

I would like to take this opportunity to also encourage people to adopt/foster pets, they really are life-changers (for the better of course). Find your little furry baby at Petfinder.

Are you really eating your Fries right?

Are you really
eating your fries right?

underline-wave.png

Once You Go Pommes Frites

You Don’t Get Fries Off the Streets

I believe I have been eating fries the wrong way! And no it has nothing to do with deep frying potatoes or an elaborate debate about the perks of an air fryer.

IMG_20180710_222918_Bokeh

Recently stumbled upon this little treasure on Macdougal Street. This hole in the wall fries haven serve authentic Belgian style fries, double cooked and topped with a variety of finger licking sauces in a cute paper cone. And for a moment you might just be transported to a beachside shack.

Don’t be greedy and go for the regular size, it is the perfect amount for one person or that way you can try different varieties. Their selection is pretty extensive and requires you to be decisive, or you’ll be left in a state of confusion.

If you have been dipping your fries in ketchup all this while, trust me your mind will be blown with their selection of sauces. As they have aptly put it, “The selection of toppings for your frites includes everything from the familiar to the exotic, and is limited only by imagination.”

Try the War Sauce made with Frite Sauce, Peanut Satay, and Raw Onions or the Wasabi. Trust me you’ll think about it for days, I am still thinking about it.

Might be a bit savory and a little hot, especially for a hot summer day like yesterday, but it’s worth every bite.

Bollywood Beats

All the single ladies put on a sexy dress, bring out those high heels you hid all winter, guzzle down some shots maybe, throw your hands up, and shimmy far away from Lexicon’s Bollywood Beats at Stage 48!!!

My cousin and I made our way to Hells Kitchen for a girls night out, you know cuz I’m #JustADesiGirl and gotta do my desi girl thing. Like all economical people, we pre-gamed before we arrived, fortunately. But boy was the night sketchy.

Firstly, Lexicon moved from its 54th St location to Stage 48, which they still haven’t updated on their website, making this lazy girl’s night off to a bad start. Secondly, we had to pay a $20 entry fee, not fun when you are stingy. And thirdly, the place is jam-packed with testosterone, and the evening was spent peeling creepy guys off of us.

The saving grace being DJSukhi who played some fun numbers and momentarily made us forget our suitors. I suppose it would have been eventful if we went as a group though. But it shouldn’t be this difficult for JustADesiGirl to enjoy a #DesiNight all by herself. Am I Right?

This beautifully crafted structure isn’t here for long; it’s expected to remain in Vizag only till the end of July before making its way to Hyderabad and then onward to the US for a year-long showcase.

☕🏃‍♀️ Coffee, community & a Sunday done right!

Last Sunday (13th July), WhyBabe & DearBebo brought together about 30-40 kindred spirits for a coffee run like no other in Vizag. It kicked off with a breezy run and then unfolded into a laid-back cool down at Whispering Waters near Mangamaripeta — complete with a sundowner hosted by DearBebo, the cutest coffee truck by Bean Board.

As the sun dipped low, three DJs took over, spinning mellow sets that soon slipped into peppy Bolly mixes, turning the whole evening into a lively little jam. With freshly brewed coffees, snacks from Bean Board’s menu, and the warm hum of conversations all around, it was a Sunday well spent — the kind that reminds you just how good simple pleasures can be. 🌸✨

Russia Diaries— A Ballet, A Babushka, And A Bit Of Vodka

Russia — A Ballet, A Babushka, &

A Bit Of Vodka

underline-wave.png

Took me nearly 11 years to check this off my Bucket List!

Join this Desi Chori all bundled up in layers, waltzing through imperial

palaces, luscious gardens, sipping vodka and chasing sunsets

during the famous White Nights of Russia.

Two cities, one tiny village and Just A Desi Chori

collecting stories, memories, tons of photos (and calories)

along the way!

Waltz into Russia Through My Eyes (and My Lens)

underline-wave.png

Weather

Visited Russia in June-July, which honestly is the best time — long sunlit days (thanks to St. Petersburg’s dreamy White Nights), pleasant temps around 18-25°C, and just-cool-enough evenings that make you reach for a light jacket. It can flip from sunny to drizzly real quick, so an umbrella is your BFF, and with all that humidity near the canals, be ready for a bit of hair drama. Overall, it’s the perfect season to wander cobblestone streets in comfy shoes, chase sunsets at 11 PM, and pack layers so you’re stylish and snug.

underline-wave.png

Things to Buy

Russia’s a total souvenir wonderland. I obviously came back with Vodka, Scarves, Ballerina Jewelry Boxes, bunch of Magnets and Chocolates. Interested people can purchase Matryoshka dolls of every shape and sass level, delicate painted wooden spoons, fluffy fur hats, and gorgeous amber jewelry that literally glows in the sun.

underline-wave.png

Language

Russian can look like an alphabet soup to us Desis — all Cyrillic squiggles and tongue-twisting words. Most locals don’t speak much English, especially outside touristy spots, so I basically survived on Google Translate, wild hand gestures, and the occasional doodle on a napkin. Honestly, half the fun was in the hilarious miscommunications. Pro tip: download the offline language pack, point your camera at menus or signboards, and voilà — instant decoder magic!

underline-wave.png

Plugs

Russia uses the standard European-style round two-pin plugs (220V). So don’t forget to pack a universal adapter unless you want to watch your phone battery crawl to zero while you panic-text your friends about it. Carry a power bank for emergency in case your camera runs out of juice and you have a picturesque site before you.

underline-wave.png

Currency

Russia runs on rubles, which meant my wallet was full of colourful notes with way too many zeroes. Although locals rely primarily on cards, it is advisable for tourists to convert their currency to avoid failed card payments. Since I was traveling in a group, most of our tickets were purchased by the travel agent, but for cute local markets or tiny cafes, cash was king. Keep emergency $$$ to convert into Rubles (there are plenty of Forex agents especially in Moscow)— haggling for Matryoshka dolls is way more fun with actual cash.

underline-wave.png

Safety

Moscow and St. Petersburg felt surprisingly chill. I walked around late during those never-ending White Nights, stuck to main streets, and kept my bag zipped tight, especially in busy areas or markets. Random people trying to sell tours or sketchy cab rides? A firm “nyet” and walking away did the trick. Trust your gut — we Desi girls come pre-installed with a pretty solid danger radar.

St. Petersburg: Where Fairy Tales Meet Frostbite

underline-wave.png

Called the Venice of the North, St. Petersburg is Russia’s elegant daydream — a city of pastel palaces, glittering canals, golden spires, and endless poetry. Built by Tsar Peter the Great to rival Europe’s grandest capitals, it still feels like a slice of Paris and Venice stitched together with Russian soul. And if you’re lucky enough to visit in summer, you’ll catch the magical White Nights, when the sun barely sets and the whole city seems to dance till dawn under a sky that refuses to go dark. From storybook churches and imperial squares to ballet halls and bridges that rise at midnight, every corner of St. Petersburg whispers history, romance, and that soft promise of never-ending twilight.

Whispers of Faith & Gold:
St. Petersburg's Sacred Jewels

underline-wave.png

Kazan Cathedral felt like a Roman dream with its giant colonnades wrapping around me. Fun fact: it was modelled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, but with a very Russian Orthodox twist. The purpose of the church has shifted over the years, consecrated as one of the most iconic structures of Russia as a Catholic Basilica, it later become a memorial for the victory over Napoleon and in recent times has become a focal point for political demonstrations.

Church of the Spilled Blood — a name that sounds like a murder mystery but is heartbreakingly beautiful, also probably the most Instagrammable church ever. Those candy-coloured onion domes hide a rather tragic history: it was built on the spot where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated.

Isaak Cathedral originally built as a Cathedral but converted into a museum. The cathedral took nearly 40 years to be constructed and was the first site to demonstrate Copernicus’ Heliocentric theory (sun is at the centre of the universe, not Earth as previously assumed) using the Foucault Pendulum.

Fun Tip: Would recommend climbing the 262 steps to get panoramic views of the city.

Catherine the Great Sure
Knew How to Shop!

underline-wave.png

The Hermitage Museum is basically Catherine the Great’s ultimate shopping spree — she started it in 1764 by buying up hundreds of paintings from Berlin, and next thing you know, it turned into one of the biggest, most jaw-dropping art collections in the world. Housed inside the ridiculously grand Winter Palace, it’s like walking through a royal diary, dripping in chandeliers and gold. I spotted Leonardo’s “Benois Madonna,” Rembrandt’s epic “Return of the Prodigal Son,” and even a Michelangelo sculpture chilling like it’s no big deal. With over 3 million pieces, the Hermitage is less “museum visit” and more “time-travel marathon.” Trust me, your feet might give up before your eyes do — but every gilded room is worth it. The Hermitage made me wish I had six days instead of six hours — Catherine the Great basically curated the world’s best art haul.

Pointy Toes & Ballet Twirls

underline-wave.png

Watching Swan Lake in St. Petersburg was one of those pinch-me moments — like stepping straight into a fairytale, but with tighter buns and shinier satin. Sitting there in a plush velvet seat, watching Tchaikovsky’s haunting score come alive in the very city where it was born, I felt equal parts fancy and emotional. The ballerinas seemed to float, the sets sparkled, and for those magical hours, it was just me, the swans, and a story that’s been breaking hearts for over a century. Honestly? Totally worth dressing up and pretending I was royal for the night.

Ready for a Cinderella Moment?

underline-wave.png

The Catherine Palace is basically a royal flex turned up to a hundred — a dazzling baroque masterpiece just outside St. Petersburg in the town of Tsarskoye Selo. Originally built for Catherine I (Peter the Great’s wife) and later massively glamorized by their daughter, Empress Elizabeth, this palace is all powder-blue walls, gilded stuccoes, and grand ballrooms that look like they were made for Cinderella’s afterparty. Its most famous gem? The Amber Room, a glowing chamber of amber panels, gold leaf, and mirrors that’s been called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Strolling through its ornate halls and lush gardens, it’s hard not to imagine powdered wigs, swirling gowns, and a lot of royal gossip echoing off the walls.

Perk: Taking Amber Vodka shots before noon, cus we are in Russia!

Versailles Who?

underline-wave.png

The Peterhof Palace is basically the Russia version of Versailles — a jaw-dropping summer estate on the Gulf of Finland, just outside St. Petersburg. Built by Peter the Great to outshine European royalty, it’s a riot of golden statues, playful fountains that sneak-attack you with surprise sprays, and manicured gardens that stretch forever. Walking through its grounds felt like stepping into a fairytale — minus the glass slippers, plus comfy sneakers (because trust me, it’s huge). With the sea sparkling in the distance and fountains dancing all around, it’s one of those places that makes you forget real life even exists.

Moscow — Grand, Gritty, Gorgeous

underline-wave.png

If St. Petersburg was all poetry, Moscow was power.

Hopped on the SAPSAN high-speed train, zipped through charming dacha houses, sleepy villages, and dense birch forests. 4 hours later, hello Moscow!

Moscow is Russia turned up to full drama — bold, brash, and totally unafraid to show off. From the iconic onion domes of St. Basil’s that look like a candy shop exploded, to the mighty Kremlin walls that have witnessed centuries of intrigue, this city is where power and poetry collide. It’s a place of grand boulevards, buzzing cafés, hidden courtyards, and nights that somehow stretch on forever. One minute you’re gawking at tsarist treasures, the next you’re sipping coffee in a hipster nook or haggling for a matryoshka at a flea market. Moscow doesn’t just welcome you; it sweeps you up in its electric, slightly chaotic embrace — and trust me, you’ll love every dizzy minute of it.

Destination:

Moscow's Iconic Heartbeat

underline-wave.png

The heart of Moscow beats loudest around the Red Square — a vast cobblestone stage framed by the mighty red walls of the Kremlin, where centuries of Russian history still whisper through its towers. Iconic doesn’t even cover the high walls and watchtower of this historic location that simply exudes power.

Here, you’ll find Lenin’s Mausoleum, eerily stoic with its dark marble façade (and yes, that really is Lenin inside, lying in state). Just steps away, St. Basil’s Cathedral pops up like a psychedelic fairytale, all candy-coloured domes and swirling patterns. And if all that grandeur makes you crave a little retail therapy, the historic 19th century GUM departmental store is right there, blending tsarist elegance with luxury shopping under its glass-vaulted arcades — perfect for pretending you’re royalty while licking pistachio ice cream. I may not have bought any designer handbags, but I had to at least try the original ladies bathroom for 200 Rubles.

Whizzing Past Moscow

underline-wave.png

Moscow State University loomed like some Gothic fairytale castle on Sparrow Hill, and the view of the sprawling city from there? Chef’s kiss.

Visited the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, rebuilt after the Soviets had demolished the original. Talk about resilience. Then wandered down Arbat Street, with buskers, souvenir shops, and tiny cafés.

If being thrifty is your style, don’t waste money at Arbat Street and dust your bargaining skills and get chatting in broken English and hand gestures for some souvenir shopping at Izmailovo Market. After putting my Desi haggling skills to use I bought some scarves, jewellery boxes, magnets, paintings, Matryoshka Dolls and more.

Start or end your day with a bit of people watching, enjoying the river side, pretty fountains, elegant swans and a lazy stroll through Gorky Central Park. After a hectic action packed trip, I decided to unwind with a glass of wine by the little pond with ducks and swans as my companions.

Spotlights and What-Ifs

underline-wave.png

The world-famous Russian Circus was a swirl of bright lights, daring acrobats, and clown acts that had me giggling — but I’ll be honest, my heart sank seeing animals still used for tricks. Watching majestic lions, tigers, elephants, and horses perform under spotlights felt a bit too old-school for me, and left me wishing they would move to a more humane show. Having said that, the grandness of the stage, production, on-site orchestra, costumes, equipment, choreography and so much more left me in awe and engaged for the 3hrs.

As for the Moscow Ballet, we couldn’t get tickets inside the legendary Bolshoi Theatre, but even standing outside was something else. The grand pillars, the ornate façade — it’s like the building itself is performing. Having watched the ballet back in NYC, I couldn’t help but dream of seeing those delicate pirouettes right here, on their home stage. Maybe next time.

Vladmir & Suzdal -
Russia's Countryside Charms

underline-wave.png

Left the big city lights for an overnight trip to Vladimir and Suzdal. Tiny cottages, gardens bursting with flowers, churches peeking out from around every bend. At the Suzdal Kremlin and Museum of Wooden Architecture, I got a real peek into Russia’s village life — simpler, sweeter, somehow more human.

Stayed at a homestay and ate at a local restaurant with homemade vibes and endless Borscht, soft freshly baked bread, creamiest of butter, and pancakes. Bliss.

Just A Desi Chori's Special Highlights

underline-wave.png

No trip is complete without the mention of food. Although I didn’t get to try as much local food and restaurants as I would have liked, I still enjoyed exploring the different preparations with a special shoutout to Borscht, the only thing that could warm me from the cold weepy weather. This soup made with meat stock, tons of vegetables and seasoning is filling and satisfying, the red beetroots being the main ingredient giving it the bright red colour. Another super satisfying dish was the Perogies, simple dumplings with potato stuffing. Its so basic but yet hits the spot all the time.

I thought the Moscow nightlife would be very happening, either I didn’t really go to the right places or us Desis just know how to party hard. However the Depo FoodMall is a pretty good place to get countless options for food and drinks and they even have various DJ stations so walk around to find your kinda vibe.

Vodka and Caviar – a hit and a miss! Obviously I am a fan of cocktails, but the local vodka was just so smooth, you wouldn’t need to pair it with anything. Start your day with sips of Stolichnaya and be merry for the rest of the day despite the gloomy weather. Caviar on the other hand was definitely a miss for me. At least I got to check it off my bucket list, but the Black and Red Caviar is not something I am a fan off. Its slimy popping and salty texture is rather off-putting and knowing what it is, is just sad to think about eating.

Last but not the least, something that made my trip to Russia extra special was all the floofs I saw! From tiny mini teacup puppies to gigantic Siberian Huskies the size of me (or more), every one of them so well groomed, enjoying the weather whether it is rain or shine, being carried in trains, planes and metros. Many shops also allow floofs to happily roam around with their petpawrent.

What Russia Taught This Desi Chori

underline-wave.png

Made me realize that history isn’t just in books, it’s in whispers of old walls and songs of balalaikas on the street. That vodka flows like water and is a valid breakfast. That ballerinas and babushkas both deserve medals. Russia is a land of contrasts, although I only saw a very tiny part of the vast country – where gilded palaces stand next to stark Soviet blocks.

And that sometimes, you find bits of home — in a stranger’s smile, in stories shared over steaming cups of tea or you make friends over shared shots, thousands of miles from your own city.

Till the next adventure,
this desi chori is signing off — heart a little heavier, phone memory full, and passport pages running out. 💛

Living the Thyolo Dream

Living the Thyolo Dream

underline-wave.png

If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be spending 2.5 months living and

volunteering at a lodge in the heart of Malawi’s tea estates, I might’ve

laughed and asked, “Where do I sign up?” Fast forward to now, and that’s

exactly what I’ve been doing — and it’s been nothing short of magical.

Thyolo House has become my little haven, a place where the

air is fresh, the food is *chef’s kiss*, and the companionship is

pure joy (shoutout to my two four-legged friends).

Destination:

Dogs Over Everything

underline-wave.png

First things first: the dogs. If you know me, you know that life with dogs is instantly 1000x better, and living with these two adorable puppers has been the ultimate perk. Milu and Waldo have reintroduced me to my lost love for lazy naps in the sun to impromptu games of fetch (that sometimes turn into “run-around-with-the-ball”), they’ve become the heart of my daily routine. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever had such loyal colleagues. They follow me around the lodge, peek at guests with curiosity, and bring so much comfort when the days get a little long. Who knew that being a lodge manager came with emotional support dogs on demand?

Destination:

La Dolce Vita, Malawi Style

underline-wave.png

Now, let’s talk food. Because food is life. Living at Thyolo House has been like being dropped into a culinary fairytale, where every meal feels like a celebration. Italian food in the middle of a tea estate in Malawi? Yes, please. I’ve been spoiled with the most amazing homemade pasta, risotto that melts in your mouth, and lasagna that tastes like it came straight from Naples. The kitchen here is a fusion wonderland — taking the freshness of local ingredients and blending them with the rich flavors of Italy. Think cheese, carbs, olive oil, and happiness, all served with a view of endless tea fields. It’s the kind of magic that makes you feel like you’re living in a movie.

Destination:

Walks, Wanderlust, and Tea Galore

underline-wave.png

Every day here starts with a morning walk through the tea fields. It’s my personal zen time, where I get to soak in the lush green hills and breathe in the cool, crisp air. There’s something so grounding about wandering through a landscape that feels untouched by time. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time but find yourself at the same time (cheesy, but true!). Some days, I’ll just stroll and take in the sights; other days, I let my mind wander, dreaming up adventures or reflecting on the conversations I’ve had with guests. Speaking of which…

Destination:

Stories from the Road

underline-wave.png

One of the most beautiful parts of being here is the people I’ve met. As the Lodge Manager, I get to greet and chat with travelers from all over the world. And let me tell you, these aren’t your average tourists — they’re the kind of people who have crossed deserts, hiked glaciers, and have stories that would make Indiana Jones raise an eyebrow. Each guest brings their own flavor of adventure, and I’ve been lucky enough to sit down with them, share a meal, and listen to their tales. From mountain climbers braving Patagonia to spiritual seekers wandering through India, the conversations I’ve had have been inspiring, heartwarming, and sometimes, downright hilarious. It most definitely inspired me to re-evaluate my travel style and destinations. If the next time you see me in a customized camper van, it will be because of the travelers I have met at Thyolo House.

Destination:

The Thyolo Life

underline-wave.png

After nearly 2.5 months of living and volunteering at Thyolo House, I can say this: it’s been an experience that will forever hold a place in my heart. There’s something so beautiful about being part of a place like this, where the world slows down, and every day is filled with simple joys — like the quiet pitter-patter of dog paws, the aroma of Italian herbs drifting through the kitchen, and the laughter of guests as they share their stories.

Living the dream? You bet. And if you’re ever in Malawi, I’ll be the one surrounded by tea fields, Italian dishes, and two tail-wagging dogs.
