Weather

The winter months of June to August promise clear skies and abundant sunshine. November, April, and May see occasional rain and is ideal for game viewing and cost-effective lodge stays. For the most awe-inspiring view of Victoria Falls, December’s heavy rain makes it the ultimate time to witness this natural wonder in its full splendor.

Credit Cards

While some shops, restaurants, and upscale lodges and hotels do accept credit cards in Zambia, it’s not exceedingly common. Visa is the most widely recognized, with Mastercard and Amex being less commonly accepted. Cash however seems to be the preferred mode of payment and having access to an ATM during your stay is advisable. US dollars are generally accepted in most places, however, you can withdraw local currency from cities and larger towns.

Language

While English serves as Zambia’s official language, Bantu languages predominate as the most commonly spoken tongues across the nation. You can easily survive if you know English as most of the people you would interact with are fluent in English.

Plugs

Zambia uses plug types C, D, and G, with a standard voltage of 230 V and a standard frequency of 50 Hz. It’s advisable to purchase a universal adapter, ensuring it includes surge protection, and consider using a converter for appliances like hairdryers and hot tools.

Currency

The official currency in Zambia is the Zambian kwacha (ZMK or ZMW), with an exchange rate of 1 USD being equivalent to 21.85 ZMK.

Safety

Zambia is a relatively safe country, but with any new location exercise caution regarding your personal safety. Cities like Livingstone are tourist friendly and besides minor injuries during adventure sports you should be fine. Stay attentive in bigger cities like Lusaka when you venture out late at night.

Dip in the Devil's Pool

underline-wave.png

No trip to Zambia is complete without witnessing the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Known locally as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” (The Smoke That Thunders), this massive waterfall is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can explore the falls from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides, each offering unique perspectives and experiences.

For the adventurous at heart, consider swimming in the famous Devil’s Pool at the edge of the falls, an experience that will leave you breathless, quite literally. As the name suggests, a plunge in the Devil’s Pool is a Daredevil act and is not for the faint hearted, but you must try and muster up the courage to view the sheer drop of the Victoria Falls from this unique angle.

The adventure experts in Livingstone take careful precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. Their guides are skilled and know every islet and crack and crease of the falls for a safe yet adventurous viewing.

Your trip would essentially start once you arrive at the little island by boat during which you might spot Hippos lazing around in the water. Head over to the edge of the rocks from where you swim in the Zambezi river. Keep in mind the currents as you are extremely close to the edge of the falls. Ropes are in place to ensure you don’t cross over to the deep side. Guides will also help those who aren’t strong swimmers.

Take a deep breath and plunge into the swimming hole and experience the natural infinity pool in all its glory! The force of the water will automatically push you to the edge, so be careful. But don’t worry the rock edge will stop you from going over.

Pro guides know where to stand and capture the perfect adrenaline rush moments for you as you lay flat on your stomach and gaze down at the river crashing down over the 100 meter (320ft) drop. Not to fear, there will be a guide holding your ankles as you look down at the double rainbow to stop you from going over.

This bucket list adventure is open only during the summer season (August – January) when the water levels are low as over 10 million litres of gushing water flow through the falls per minute, whereas during monsoon season it can go over 500 million litres per minute. Book your time slot in advance as spots fill up fast and it is mandatory to go with a guide.

Destination:

Soar the skies in a Microlight

underline-wave.png

The “Flight of Angels” is unquestionably the most awe-inspiring method to behold the magnificent Victoria Falls in all their splendor. This experience also provides an exceptional opportunity to witness the Zambezi River’s approach to the Falls and the remarkable gorge formation below.

The Microlight Flights are a two person open flight that rides over the Falls that encompass the Batoka Gorge, the Zambezi River, and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. These flights often come equipped with wing-mounted cameras, and you can purchase a DVD to relive the experience. Microlights offer an intimate aerial perspective, accommodating only a qualified pilot and one passenger per aircraft. The flight takes roughly 15 minutes and the experienced pilot will help you spot Elephants, Rhinos, Crocodiles, Hippos and other game in the national park.

walk with the king of the jungle

Have you ever dreamt of walking alongside some of the world’s most awe-inspiring and majestic felines in the heart of Africa? I recently had the privilege of embarking on a “Walking with the Lions” safari in Zambia, and it was an experience that exceeded all my expectations.

In the midst of Zambia’s breathtaking natural beauty we shared a thrilling and humbling experience getting to know the royalty of the wild. This adventure was organized by expert guides who provided their expertise and knowledge of the wildlife. These guides played a crucial role in ensuring our safety and the welfare of the lions. Their dedication to conservation and education was palpable as they shared their wealth of information about lion behavior and their role in the ecosystem.

As we embarked on the walk with extreme caution and guidelines, there they were, the kings and queens of the savannah, majestically leading us through their territory. The raw and powerful presence of the lions is a once in a lifetime experience that will leave you in awe.

Throughout the walk, our guides educated us about lion conservation, the challenges they face in the wild, and the critical importance of preserving their habitat. This encounter provided a unique platform for understanding the delicate balance that exists between humans and wildlife.

The guides meticulously explained the do’s and don’ts, ensuring that we respected the lions and their space. It was evident that the welfare of the lions was at the forefront of their efforts.

What sets this experience apart is the positive impact it has on lion conservation. The funds generated from these encounters often support vital conservation programs and anti-poaching initiatives. By participating, I felt like I was contributing to the protection and preservation of these incredible animals.

As an animal lover I felt a deep bond with these lions and a profound appreciation for the ecosystems they inhabit. The walk is not just to pet, walk with and understand these majestic beings but also is a means to fostering a deeper connection with the natural world and contributing to the conservation of these incredible creatures.

If you’re an animal enthusiast and passionate about wildlife conservation, I strongly recommend embarking on this remarkable journey. It’s an experience that will leave you inspired, humbled, and forever changed.

sunset cruise on the zambezi

As the African sun begins its slow descent toward the horizon, casting a warm golden glow on the Zambezi River, there’s no better way to savor this natural masterpiece than on a tranquil sunset cruise. Be part of a symphony of colors, sounds, and the feeling of being in the heart of the wild as you set sail on a sunset cruise.

As we ventured onto the river, nature’s canvas unfolded before us. The Zambezi River, one of Africa’s mightiest, reflected the fiery hues of the setting sun, creating a breathtaking backdrop for our journey. The water glistened with golden ripples, and the distant silhouettes of acacia trees painted a serene panorama.

The Zambezi River is not only a stunning sight but also a thriving ecosystem. Our cruise was punctuated by the sight of numerous bird species, from fish eagles to herons, taking flight along the riverbanks. We were also treated to glimpses of wildlife coming to the river’s edge to drink. Crocodiles sunning themselves on the riverbanks, elephants cooling themselves with a mud and water bath and hippos lazing in the river added an element of wonder and excitement.

After some adventure packed thrill inducing activities the sunset cruise is the opportunity to unwind. Sip on refreshing drinks and sample delectable snacks, all while the melodies of the river and the warm breeze create an atmosphere of pure relaxation. The boat’s friendly crew made sure that our every need was met.

After taking a plunge into the adrenalin inducing Devil’s Pool take a look at the full force of the mighty cascade as you hike along the Victoria Falls. As you navigate through the rocky path you will encounter the sound of the cascading water grow louder, foretelling the grandeur that lies ahead.

A nearly 2 hour trek with moments where the mist from the falls begins to envelop you, creates an ethereal atmosphere. The spray from Victoria Falls is not just a sensation but a companion on this journey, casting rainbows in the air and adding to the magic of the hike.

One of the highlights of the hike was the opportunity to stand at the viewpoints and witness the sheer force of the water as it tumbled over the precipice. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, as the thundering sound resonates in your ears.

Rhino Walking Safari

underline-wave.png

A rhino walking safari is an extraordinary adventure that allows you to get up close and personal with one of the world’s most magnificent, endangered and shy creatures: the rhinoceros. These walking safaris are typically conducted in protected wildlife reserves or national parks where rhino populations are carefully managed and conserved.

Knowledgeable guides accompany you on the safari to ensure your safety and to provide insights into the rhino’s behavior, habitat, and conservation efforts. Unlike traditional game drives, walking safaris offer a more intimate experience, allowing you to approach rhinos on foot. This proximity provides an unmatched opportunity to observe these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

The guides and forest rangers often share information about the rhino’s biology, behavior, and the challenges they face due to poaching and habitat loss. This firsthand encounter can deepen your understanding of rhino conservation.

It’s important to choose a reputable and ethical safari operator that is committed to responsible tourism and conservation. These majestic beings are prone to poaching primarily driven by demand for their horns. The Rhino horns are highly sought after in illegal markets, particularly in Asia as they are believed to have medicinal properties in traditional Chinese medicine, even though there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. Traditional beliefs regarding the curative properties of rhino horn, despite being unfounded, persist in some cultures, driving demand for these products.

So remember that rhinos are an extremely endangered species, and your actions should always prioritize their well-being. A rhino walking safari is a unique opportunity to witness these incredible animals while contributing to their survival in the wild.

Fun Fact: It is widely considered that Rhinos are attracted to campfire. The strong smell of fire irritates them and will rush to stomp them out, given that it is a small fire.
