Driving up to Cape Maclear from Lilongwe, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking change of scenery that unfolded before me. From the lush green hills and winding roads to the sudden appearance of the crystal-clear waters stretched as far as the eye could see, framed by immersive blue sky. Mgoza Lodge, perched right in the centre overlooking the lake, offered a panoramic vista that truly took my breath away.

On a budget while
traveling with friends, Mgoza Lodge is the perfect stop to enjoy the
tranquil oasis without feeling the crunch on your pocket. The lodge’s simple
charm, combined with its warm and welcoming atmosphere and great cocktails,
instantly made me feel at home. The cozy beach chairs overlooking the lake with
the wind blowing or dipping into the pool on a hot sunny day are just a few
ways to find a peaceful sanctuary to unwind and reconnect with nature after a
day of exploration.

location on the shores of Lake Malawi, Mgoza Lodge served as the perfect
launchpad for my outdoor adventures. From snorkelling amidst colourful fish and
vibrant coral reefs to paddleboarding along the shimmering waters, every moment
was filled with exhilarating discoveries and unforgettable experiences.

You may not want to do much and just sip cocktails by the pool but make an effort and venture beyond the confines of Mgoza Lodge. Start off by jumping into the lake and enjoy the hot day cooling off amongst the fishes and clear blue water.

Rent a kayak or a paddleboard and make your way to the Thumbi Island. It may seem close enough, but take it from me, it’s not. But that only makes the adventure even more thrilling and worthwhile. Tag along with a local and they’ll show you some of the hidden gems that are only known to the local community and discover a whole other side to Cape Maclear!

Although being around the Lake might be all you want to do, but explore the beauty of Cape Maclear by hiking through lush forests teeming with wildlife, the vista from up to are simply spectacular and will be etched in your memory. There are several hiking trails to choose from and depending on your interests, pace and energy levels the locals can guide you to the perfect one.

Don’t miss your chance to encounter the vibrant culture of the local communities, right from the staff at Mgoza to the shop vendors and literally anyone walking on the street can instantly become your friend. The people are super nice and laidback, the community relies heavily on international tourists but their friendliness is genuine and heartwarming, it definitely provided me with a deeper appreciation for this idyllic destination.

If you have tuned into my journeys before you already know my love for trying different cuisines and restaurants. Back at Mgoza Lodge, my culinary cravings were satisfied with an array of delectable dishes featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From traditional Malawian delicacies to international fare, each meal was a culinary delight that tantalized my taste buds and provided a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
For an evening escapade make your way to the Hiccups Bar to get the real vibe of Malawians like to party. Just a 2-3 min walk from Mgoza Lodge, the bar is where the life is after dark. Good music, lots of space to dance and make new friends, its where everyone goes after a day of hard work or post sunkissed retreat.

Precaution
As exciting swimming in the lake can be, please be aware of the Schistosoma haematobium parasite, commonly known as Bilharzia. The bacteria enters the body through contact with water. Symptoms start with high fever, rashes, diarrhoea and can escalate. It is advised especially for tourists to take a course of praziquantel. Consult a doctor or a pharmacist to prescribe the right dosage depending on your body weight.
