skeleton coast, namibia
This sparsely inhabited haunting beauty found along Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is positioned between the Swakop and Kunene Rivers to the north of Swakopmund, is a rugged and untamed region where the vast dunes of the Namib Desert meet the relentless Atlantic Ocean.
The name “Skeleton Coast” originates from the numerous shipwrecks scattered along these shores, remnants of vessels that met their fate in the shallow and turbulent waters over the centuries. For bird enthusiasts, the area is a haven, teeming with seabirds congregating near these wrecks. Additionally, it serves as a habitat for a substantial seal colony, adding to the coastal wilderness’s allure.
