Situated in the Southern Region of Malawi, spanning over 500 sq. km, Liwonde National Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Through dedicated wildlife reintroduction efforts, Liwonde has emerged as the premier destination in Malawi for carnivore sightings, particularly cheetahs and lions.

Encounters with the renowned “big five” – lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, and rhinos – are essential experiences during any visit to Liwonde. Notably, the park is a sanctuary for the endangered black rhino, protected within dedicated enclosures.

However, during our visit we were lucky enough to spot a trio of lions, several hippos and elephants and a variety of bird species.

Or you can simply kick back and take a 2hr cruise along the river while you sip some beer and spot the elephants, hippos and crocodiles as they go about their day.

Check out the newly launched Waters Edge by Serendip, located on the banks of the Shire River and a mere 20min drive from the Liwonde National Park. The accommodations are quaint and peaceful, with their amenities new and well maintained. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. During out visit we were the only family on the property and the staff made us feel very much at home. The food by the Sri Lankan chef was amazing, we loved all the meals and different dishes that we had tried. Would definitely recommend staying here for a relaxing stay with your family with great views and even better food!
